Accessibility & Inclusivity
This statement was last updated on 6th March 2025.
Our Commitment to Inclusion
At Sequity, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do—so much that we made “equity” part of our name. We are committed to ensuring that genomics and epidemiology are accessible, inclusive, and impactful for all communities, regardless of background, ability, or language.
We design our efforts with inclusivity in mind. While we strive to do our best, we recognise that there is always more to learn and improve. If you encounter any barriers or need content in an alternative format, please contact us at hello@sequity.bio. We would love to help more people engage with genomics and epidemiology.
Equitable Access to Genomics & Public Health
We recognise that access to genomics and epidemiology is not universal across all populations and addressing this is central to our mission at Sequity. We are committed to bridging gaps by providing tailored solutions and capacity-building for equitable access to genomic tools, data, and knowledge. While not all genomics and epidemiology solutions work in all environments, we strive to find practical, adaptable solutions that fulfill public health and research goals in any setting. Our goal is to ensure that all communities and projects benefit from genomic advancements in ways that are practical, sustainable, and impactful.
Creating an Inclusive Culture
At Sequity, we are a company that values diversity, equity, and inclusion, including (but not limited to) people across all abilities, ages, sexes, genders, races, ethnicities, religions and sexual orientations. We actively seek to collaborate with scientists, policymakers, and communities from diverse backgrounds and regions. We commit to:
-
A welcoming environment for all employees, contractors, clients, and collaborators
-
Fair opportunities and representation for everyone
-
Continually learning and evolving our inclusivity practices
Inclusive Access for All Abilities
We recognize that people have different abilities to participate in auditory, cognitive, neurological, physical, speech, and visual tasks. We strive to exceed the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards to improve the accessibility of our website and other materials for people with disabilities. Our efforts include:
-
Using clear text and high-contrast colours for text, UI components and key images
-
Providing alternative text for images and meaningful links for screen readers
-
Making our content navigable with a keyboard
-
Using a mobile-friendly design when possible
We also ensure our PDF documents comply with PDF/UA (Universal Accessibility) standard, meaning that they are more compatible with screen readers. Many of the considerations listed below make our content more accessible for all languages, but can also support different needs and preferences relating to ability, so be sure to keep reading.
Inclusive Access for All Languages
We want to make genomics, epidemiology and all the materials we provide available to everyone regardless of the language that you speak. Although achieving full multilingual accessibility is challenging, we take the following steps to make our content more inclusive:
-
Written Materials:
-
We work with professional translators when possible and design our written content to be suitable for automated translation (e.g., via Google Translate)
-
Our typefaces support hundreds of languages, ensuring readability and accessibility for non-English characters
-
-
Meetings & Training:
-
We welcome interpreters for both online and in-person engagements
-
When feasible, we try to circulate material prior to any presentations or discussions so you can familiarise yourself with the content
-
We enable automated live captions and translations during online meetings that we set up
-
You are able to communicate during online meetings using messaging, voice or video. We’re conscious to provide anonymous methods for communication when possible
-
After meetings, we can share summaries, video/audio recordings, and transcripts
-
-
We’re conscious to try to use International English, rather than a British (or any other) dialect, and keep things straight-forward. We try to speak at a moderate pace too.
Inclusive Access for All Technologies
Not everyone has access to the latest technologies. In addition to offering guidance on implementing genomics with diverse infrastructure and resource levels, we try to ensure technology isn't a barrier by
-
Ensuring our website performs efficiently on low-bandwidth internet connections (2G/3G)
-
Providing downloadable recordings and transcripts of online meetings to mitigate connectivity issues, timezone and availability challenges
